What Type of Glass Panes Do you Need? The following are two of our most frequently requested products, single- and double-pane glass.

Double Pane

Double glazing insulates nearly twice as efficiently as single glazing. Some double-pane windows use glass only, while others use thin plastic films as inner layers. With double-pane windows the air space between the panes of glass has a big effect on energy performance. A very thin air space does not insulate as well as a thicker air space because of the conductivity through that small space. However, too much air space also causes inefficiencies. The best performance is found in windows with just the right space between pane and with low-conductivity gas fill rather than plain air.

Single Pane

Single pane windows are still an option for some. The advantage of single pane is lower cost, but with lower cost comes lower efficiency. In colder climates too much warmth is lost, and too much heat gain is experienced in hotter climates. So over the long term a single glazed window won't be best for your energy costs, though installing a quality storm window can help a lot with insulation.
